The devalpa is described as appearing as a decrepit and pathetic looking old man who is standing on the side of the road, deeply sighing sadly to himself. He will ask those who pass by to carry him on their shoulders; if anyone should comply, once he is seated, numerous serpentine legs suddenly erupt out from his abdomen and entwine around the body of his would-be helper demanding they work for him. The only way to be rid of this creature is to trick it into drinking copious amounts of wine. Once it passes out, the devalpa can be shrugged off.
